iMAL would like to dedicate a space of gratitude and remembrance to the extraordinary contributions that Karin Ohlenschläger and Peter Weibel have made to the field of art, science and technology.
Karin Ohlenschläger
KARIN OHLENSCHLÄGER was a historian and curator who focused on media art, science, and digital culture. She was as well artistic director of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijon, Spain (2016–2021). She has chaired the Banquet Foundation of Art, Science, Technology and Society (1998–2006) and co-founded and co-directed MediaLab Madrid (2002/2006). Her exhibition projects and publications include When the butterflies of the soul flutter their wings…, Art, Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence and D3US EX M4CH1NA (cat. Etopia/ LABoral Art Center, 2022); Eco_ visionaries (cat. Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2018); VIDA. Art and Artificial Life 1999– 2012 (cat. Espacio Telefonica, Madrid, 2012); Ecomedia. Ecological Strategies in Today’s Art (Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2007) and the series banquet_metabolism and communication (2003), banquet_communication in evolution (2005) and banquet_nodes and networks (cat. SEACEX y Edición Turner, 2009), among many others.
Karin curated the retrospective exhibition THE ARTWORK AS A LIVING SYSTEM.
In the framework of this screening programme, we will show 'ESPACIO P. 1981-1997’, from Metrópolis Program (La 2 TVE, Television Española, May 1st, 2018).
Peter Weibel
PETER WEIBEL was Chairman and CEO of ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, director of the Peter Weibel Research Institute for Digital Cultures at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and professor emeritus of media theory at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. A central figure in European media art, he was active as artist, theoretician, and curator. He published widely in the intersecting fields of art and science. His career spanned the study of literature, medicine, logic, philosophy, and film in Paris and Vienna to working artist to head of the digital arts laboratory at the Media Department of New York University in Buffalo (1984–1989) and founding director of the Institute of New Media at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main (1989– 1994). He was artistic director of Ars Electronica in Linz (1986–1995), Seville Biennial (BIACS3, 2008), and Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2011) and commissioned the Austrian pavilions at the Venice Biennale (1993–1999) and was chief curator of the Neue Galerie Graz (1993–1998).
The screening programme will include a short retrospective produced by ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe ("Peter Weibel, a look back 1999 - 2023"), as well as three of his own works:
