We are pleased to announce the first two projects selected for this year’s edition of our iMAL Projects Office residencies : Sustainable Media by Ava Zevop and En(fado) by Bárbara C. Branco!
For our first Production Residency, the jury has unanimously agreed to choose Ava Zevop and her proposal Sustainable Media : Degrowing Visual Culture and Computation. This project « explores critically the digital world as it is presented to us, and proposes to re-think and to produce new ideas for alternative digital futures ».
The jury – comprising external experts Juliette Bibasse and Ils Huygens, with iMAL team members Yannick Antoine, Élie Bolard & Lucía García – highlighted that this is a topic of great interest, and that its “goal to de-correlate the content from its medium makes a lot of sense in nowadays digital culture”. In addition, the jury was intrigued by the potential forms of the outcome and, in particular, the realisation of its sensory and perceptual aspects.
This residency and its results will be part of our activities for the EU Digital Deal project. Co-funded by Creative Europe, EUDD is a three-year investigation into the accelerated, and at times unconsidered adoption of new technologies, and how it can alter or undermine democratic processes.
For the STAGES Residency, a jury, composed of members of A Two Dogs Company and iMAL has selected the proposal of Bárbara C. Branco. Her project, temporarily titled Enfado, is inspired by a longing for the sea, that she will try to evoke through a performance incorporating a series of low-tech installations. « Sprinkled with hints of climate crisis fear, love for ecology and self-conscious and self-deprecating humour », Bárbara wants « to bring the Portuguese coast to iMAL ».
ATDC noted that they appreciate how Enfado is « an authentic artistic gesture, with a real necessity behind it ». Together, we think that her proposal will make optimal use of the spaces, possibilities and knowledge of both organisations. We look forward to welcoming Bárbara and lending our support to her ideas !
We would like to thank all the applicants of this 3rd iPO call, which has seen the highest participation. We have found projects that have inspired us and helped us to have a better insight into the artistic community that is closest to us. A community we want to support and pay special attention to!
Many thanks also to Juliette Bibasse, Ils Huygens, Kris Verdonck and Daniel Romero Calderon for their valuable contribution.
The selected projects for our Fablab residencies will be announced soon!
